Approach
Our approach combines technical expertise with artistic vision resulting in landscapes that are implementable, maintainable and have the fortitude to mature gracefully over time. Each project begins with data collection and listening. We build a plan to suit each project individually. Through site analysis and program development we collaborate and establish the project priorities. Each project and client has unique opportunities and goals which combine to create meaningful places that enhance the quality of life and connect people with their landscapes.
YDS is equally qualified to act as the prime consultant or as part of a team to ensure a continuity of design and concept. Depending on the project needs, we offer master plan & community engagement resources, construction documentation from concept to permit plans, specifications & estimates. Bidding assistance and construction assistance support the client during the construction phase.
Having been the landscape architect representing both private and public sectors at different times, we have insights and understanding of the perspective of both. We use this experience to better communicate and ease the process of jurisdictional approvals. We calibrate our work scope to each project approach whether it needs to hold up to the public bid process, design-build or a negotiation with a quality construction team. YDS issues quality documents which are biddable and withstand the scrutiny of the public bid process when needed.
About Me
As a professionally licensed practicing landscape architecture in California for more than 25 year, I have grown with the industry and our environment to create sustainable outdoor spaces that harmonize with the natural and cultural foundations of the project. I grew up in Florida, the son of an architect, grandson of a developer. My early experiences included nature hikes, river and ocean explorations, wandering construction sites and planting & propagation in our family greenhouse. I studied architecture but gratefully realized the potential of merging my design and problem solving passion with the natural environment resulting in a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from the University of Arizona. Having interned in both Florida and Arizona, I moved to northern California after graduation. In my career I have been certified as a Bay Friendly Professional, Public Playground Safety Inspector and actively participated in California Parks and Recreation Society, California Native Plant Society and American Society of Landscape Architects.
Young Design Studios melds the social and environmental elements of the project program to create highly usable spaces, enhance the social experience and respect the environment and resources. We encourage universal access in all our design solution whether overt or not and believe that play is for all ages and abilities. Our design solutions emphasize the use of native planting, water conservation and locally sourced materials with the functionality and real world parameters to create spaces that are beautiful, maintainable and a fulfillment of the client priorities.
